Mr Yum on A Current Affair: How tech can put an end to dining and dashing

Mr Yum’s Chief Operations Officer and Co-founder, Adrian Osman, appeared on A Current Affair to talk about how tech can stop dining and dashing.

A very uncool act was caught on camera by a restaurant in Coburg, Melbourne when a group of 12 naughty boys were filmed running out on their $500 bill.

The footage went viral when Old School Pizza posted it to TikTok. This led to Nine Network’s A Current Affair doing a story on the situation, which featured our COO and Co-founder, Adrian Osman. Still following? Let’s look at what was discussed.

Naughty boys forgiven

The dirty dozen had their fill of pizza and drinks before they did the bad boy boot shuffle outta there, leaving the venue high and dry. Look, it’s not a great thing – we can all agree on that, but the people at Old School Pizza have kindly forgiven the misdeed.

Old School Pizza Co-owner, Kamal Soueid said they would welcome the dashers back. Although he added that it would be nice if they apologised, but he realises that young people make mistakes (not me, I was perfect).

To stop it from happening again, Old School Pizza is looking into changing its outside dining processes.

Preventing further shenanigans

This was when Adrian stepped up to the plate to shame the culprits and add some insights into how venues can avoid thefts like this from happening.

“It’s pretty gross what these guys have done. They should be banned from restaurants, in my opinion,” Adrian said.

He continued by stating that hospitality owners have had it tough recently, and we should support them as best we can instead of ripping them off. Although, he does have a solution for shady behaviour.

When diners place an order through mobile-powered platforms like Mr Yum, they have to pay upfront for their goods. It’s essentially a dine-and-dash deterrent like no other.

And as Adrian told the A Current Affair team, there are provisions to stop sneaky tactics like chargebacks and fraudulent transactions.

"We've invested a lot into security to make sure that, firstly, the orders are paid," Adrian said.
